The Brokk Vacuum Excavation System Synonymous with Safety

If you have recently visited the UK, chances are you have come across a Brokk vacuum excavation system being used on a highway project. Such projects are common in the UK and beyond, where an alternative solution to conventional excavation methods is needed. THE BROKK VACUUM EXCAVATION SYSTEM revolutionizes efficiency and safety in debris removal and maintenance tasks, minimizing damages and ensuring safety every step of the way.

Suction Excavation UK is a leading company providing operated vacuum excavation equipment for a range of construction and utilities industries. Brokk spoke to Jake Mundy, the Operations Director for Suction Excavation UK to discuss the key benefits of changing to suction excavation methods using the Brokk robot. Let’s dig right into it!

Out with the old, in with efficiency

The Brokk vacuum excavation system is a popular choice in projects involving highways, railways, gas, power, and more. This remote-controlled excavation solution is a common sight in construction projects, waste disposal projects, tunneling projects and disaster sites; safely creating suction holes in the ground to remove heavy debris and materials from the holes created. This quick no-dig excavation process minimizes the risk of damaging or disturbing any hidden services, particularly in urban and suburban areas.

Challenges become a thing of the past

It comes as no surprise that significant challenges are often encountered with traditional excavation methods. Manual handling is a major issue, especially in areas inaccessible to the standard vacuum arm. The use of mini excavators with extension pipes often results in unsafe working conditions, as operators cannot see all angles of the excavation site, which increases the risk of accidents. The process is often labor-intensive and time-consuming, relying heavily on manual shoveling to feed materials into the pipes.

“We were facing challenges where there were areas that we couldn’t reach with the arm,’’ said Mundy. ’Then we’d have to put extension pipes on and then we’d be manual handling the material into the pipe.’’

But thanks to the Brokk vacuum excavation system, nothing is out of reach and every project is conducted with the operator’s safety in mind. ‘’That’s when we went down the route of Brokk, thanks to its remote nozzle, it takes out the manual handling,’’ added Mundy.

An obvious solution to a widespread problem

The use of the Brokk vacuum excavation system has transformed Suction Excavation UK’s excavation approach. The remote-controlled nozzle eliminates the need for manual handling, significantly enhancing safety and efficiency. With models like the BROKK 120D for tight spaces and the BROKK 520D for heavier, more demanding highway and rail projects, the remote-controlled robot proves adaptable and robust across various environments, offering a versatile solution no matter the scope of the project.

‘’A normal VacEx can’t fit down alleyways,’’ said Mundy. ‘’The smaller Brokk 120D fits down an alleyway and takes out manual handling once again; so, it’s obviously a lot safer.’’

Improved efficiency, improved safety

The remote operation capability of the Brokk vacuum excavation system allows operators to maintain a clear line of sight over the excavation area, ensuring precise and safer digging. This innovation translates into substantial time savings and enhanced project outcomes.

“Where you probably had a VacEx say for three days to do one job, you probably reduce it down to one day now that you’ve got the remote nozzle of the Brokk,’’ said Mundy.

‘’It’s improved every aspect. It’s sped jobs up and it is a lot safer.’’

Not to mention the environmental benefits of utilizing a Brokk no-dig method, which allows the operator to focus on a targeted working area. In simple terms, this means less unnecessary excavation, and as such, less waste.

Versatility at its finest

The Brokk vacuum excavation system’s maneuverability has proven beneficial in various scenarios, including navigating tight spaces, and handling soft ground. This versatility has allowed Suction Excavation UK to undertake challenging projects that were previously impractical.

“The Brokk’s flexibility is great for alleyway works, around the back buildings where you can’t get the back edges. It’s also useful on soft ground,” said Mundy.

Impactful results

By choosing an advanced no-dig, remote-controlled solution, Brokk has been instrumental in addressing several longstanding challenges faced in their excavation processes. The enhancements in safety, efficiency, and project execution are evident.

“Brokk has improved every aspect. It’s sped jobs up and looks better than having a mini digger with a pipe over the top, with obviously the operator sat on the seat,” said Mundy.

A new excavation standard

For professionals in the excavation industry, the Brokk vacuum excavation system offers a significant advancement over traditional methods. Its safety, efficiency, and versatility make it an invaluable asset for any excavation project.

“With a Brokk, you’re standing over the top of the excavation site, where you can see what you’re doing,’’ said Mundy. ‘’Obviously it’s improved a lot for us, it’s been beneficial for us.’’ Choose safety, choose Brokk!

The Brokk vacuum excavation system has undeniably revolutionized how operators approach excavation projects, setting a new standard in safety and efficiency in the industry.
